The man died last night from injuries sustained in the collision on Monday evening. The 89-year-old woman is in the hospital. They were met while walking in a residential area near Wigan, Greater Manchester.
The police arrested a 22-year-old woman at the scene, who has since been released.
Officials are now asking for witnesses or dashcam footage, Manchester Evening News says.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police Department said: “Police are seeking witnesses after a man died and a woman was critically injured after being hit by a car in Wigan.
“On Monday, October 18, just before 7pm, officers were called to Swan Lane to report that two pedestrians had been hit by a car.
“The ambulance came and a 91-year-old man and an 89-year-old woman were taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
“Despite all the efforts of the rescue personnel, the man unfortunately died overnight (Thursday, October 21).”
The spokesman added: “The 89-year-old woman remains in critical condition.
“The officers are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and are keen to speak to anyone who has information.”
Police officer Karl Horner from the Serious Collision Division said: “This was a tragic incident in which an elderly man unfortunately lost his life. Our thoughts are very much with his loved ones at this terrible time.”
