Wigan Athletic has stormed towards the top of the League One table this year and is still waiting for new recruits like Joe Bennett to arrive this year – but boss Leam Richardson has told Wigan Today that the player has been “postponing a week” been ‘or two’ in his recovery from an injury.
The Latics will need the strongest possible squad to challenge not only for promotion from the third division but also for the league title, and this will be a blow to the club and its fans.
Bennett has extensive experience in the EFL, has appeared frequently for Cardiff City and has also spent time with the likes of Middlesbrough, Aston Villa and Brighton.

However, he does not have to assert himself in the DW stadium due to injury and that is a blow to the team, because his knowledge of the game at this level and higher could certainly have helped Wigan in his pursuit of promotion to the second level.
Worse still, the club’s boss, Wigan Today, announced today that he had suffered a blow that ultimately set him back further in the recovery process. He said, “Joe had a little setback in the beginning, but he’s improving the loads. With every injury you sometimes get small mistakes that you can no longer escape.
“That set him back a week or two, but by and large it doesn’t really matter.”
Bennett will then have to wait even longer to bow for the Latics in League One, but after such a setback he will no doubt be determined to fire off-screen for his new team and impress the club as they are trying to challenge at the right end of the league.
The judgment
Joe Bennett is a solid addition to Wigan, especially considering how much he has played in the past and how much experience he has. It is then unfortunate that the player had to sit out for so long without appearing for them.
However, the player can use this to try to come back even stronger and will no doubt try desperately to prove that he can still make it at this level and be an asset to his new team. With his team doing fine he may have to try and wait for an opportunity to get into the starting XI but once he does you can expect him to work hard to stay there.
