It started with a harmless tweet on Christmas Eve last year.
Iain Lindley wrote: “Ladies and gentlemen, I’ll give you the Wigan Kebab for Christmas: a mince pie on a brioche bun.
“No need to thank me.”
And because 2021 was the year of progress and making strange decisions, I’m here exactly a year later, with a Christmas wigan kebab in hand.

We’ve all heard of a Wigan Kebab – the ever-popular pie and bar combo – but the Christmas Wigan Kebab is new to me.
And apparently, according to its creator, it’s not really a thing anyway.
Iain told me, “This is a year-long social media gag. It was an isolated incident. “
The Christmassy Wigan Kebab could use a little butter
To give me a little more context, he said it was something he made up with friends.
“It was a Facebook friend joke that got out of hand,” he said.
“I’m sure I can’t be the first to think of it.”
Even so, my editor had already convinced himself of the idea of wandering over to Aldi on a busy Christmas Eve afternoon to buy brioche rolls and mince pies and try them for myself.
For anyone wondering, it’s a relatively simple recipe: put the mince pie in the brioche bun and eat it. Job is a good ‘un.
It looks a little messy, tbh
Despite its unusual combination, the festive kebab actually tasted pretty good. It was like a fruitcake donut, if you will.
The mix of crumbly mince pie with soft sweet brioche certainly made for a unique taste party in my mouth, but this is really pretty much Christmas, isn’t it?
I debated whether or not to add butter but decided to go dry and taste the ingredients as nature intended. Big mistake.
It turned out to be quite dry and needed something to soak up. Maybe next time I’ll try a few sips of Bucks Fizz on the side.
If I had to rate it I would give it a 3 out of 5. It was actually fine and harmless – there are worse things I could have put in my mouth so I shouldn’t be complaining.
Posing with my little Wigan Christmas Kebab
While my 12-year-old nephew was wondering what on earth I was doing, I made him plunge into the festive joy.
His verdict: “It tasted like fruit bread.” Bish bash bosh.
At £ 1.58 for four brioche buns and six Aldi mince pies, it’s a treat too.
Will i have it again Probably not. Get inspired to give it a try after reading this? Probably not.
And did Iain create something completely new that Wiganers can be proud and happy of at Christmas time? It looks pretty dubious right now, but stranger things happened in 2021.
