Harvey Howard
England and Great Britain international forward Harvey Howard signed with Leeds in 1994. Beginning his career at the start of the 90s with Widnes, he also played for Australian side Eastern Suburbs during the 1993 season, making four appearances. He was back in the black and white of Widnes for the 1994 season but made a handful of appearances again before signing for Leeds, where he played 18 times and scored one try.
Over the next two seasons, he made a combined 42 appearances in blue and amber, before the introduction of Super League in 1996 saw the prop end his time in Leeds to venture back to Australia.
Following spells with Western Suburbs, Bradford Bulls and Brisbane Broncos, the prop was part of a signing frenzy at the DW Stadium as he was brought to Wigan, after a move for Warrington’s Mark Hilton broke down. He spent two years in Wigan’s colours, making 57 appearances during that time, but notably featured in Stuart Raper’s team that lost out to Bradford 37-6 in the 2001 Grand Final. He left the club in 2003 to sign for Hull KR.
Shane Millard
Former London and Widnes hooker Shane Millard signed for the Rhinos ahead of the 2006 season.
The Australian, who spent time with Sydney City, Western Suburbs, South Sydney and St George Illawarra Dragons in the NRL too, bolstered Tony Smith’s hooking options for 2006. In his sole season in blue and amber he made 30 appearances, including coming off the bench in the Challenge Cup semi-finals against Huddersfield and Play-Off eliminator versus Warrington Wolves. He also scored four tries.
In December 2006, he moved to Wigan, who would be hit with a four point deduction for a salary cap breach later that season. 2007 would be Millard’s final year playing the sport as he ran out 27 times in all competitions for the Cherry and Whites. He also played against his former side Leeds in the Final Eliminator as the Rhinos defeated Wigan on their way to lifting the Grand Final trophy.
Nathan McAvoy
Outside back Nathan McAvoy was picked up by Leeds on a one-year deal after being released by Salford in 2005. The former Red Devil and Bradford player made his Rhinos debut in April 2006 against Leigh in the Challenge Cup but was released later that month to take up an opportunity with Wigan.
He stayed in cherry and white for the remainder of the season, making 17 appearances in all competitions and scoring five tries, the last of which came in the final home game of the regular season against Hull FC as the Warriors missed out on the Play- Offs. He signed for Bradford the following year.
Liam Botham
Son of legendary cricketer Ian Botham, Liam Botham joined the Rhinos in 2003 from Leeds Tykes Rugby Union on a dual code contract. He made his Super League debut towards the end of the season, making his one and only appearance against Castleford Tigers.
He made another appearance off the bench in 2004 and also featured on loan with London but at the end of the campaign, the back rower signed a one-year deal that meant he could only play Rugby League for the Rhinos for the 2005 campaign.
During the course of his final season in Leeds, he scored four tries in thirteen appearances but was released from his contract mid season. Wigan took the 27-year old to bolster their squad depth and he played five games, before being forced to retire with a neck injury.
