A new police team has started work in Greater Manchester to fight modern slavery.
Its main objective will be to increase the prosecution of modern slavery across the region.
The reports to the Greater Manchester Police (GMP) more than doubled within a year in 2019/20.
In 2018/19 there were 254 modern slavery crimes, the following year there were 390.

Modern slavery involves the exploitation of vulnerable people for sexual exploitation, forced labor, and housework.
The new investigation into the force’s Modern Slavery – embedded in the Modern Slavery Unit last month – consists of six employees and officers.
You will work with department officials to investigate modern slavery, secure the “supreme evidence” and protect the victims.
You will also analyze information to improve the picture of modern day slavery and human trafficking in the Greater Manchester area and to be part of targeted operations.
Raising awareness of what modern slavery is and what signs to look for is also a top priority for the team so that they can seek help from the public in identifying vulnerable people who are being exploited.
Detective Chief Inspector Claire McGuire of GMP’s Modern Slavery Coordination Unit said, “Modern slavery is a cruel and gruesome crime that is sadly happening in the Greater Manchester communities around us.

“GMP’s priority is to identify vulnerable victims of this crime and ensure they get the support they deserve.
“The recent HMICFRS report ‘The Hidden Victim’ singled out GMP as one of the six forces in the UK with 75% of modern slavery law enforcement requests to the CPS and will be the leading force in our modern slavery response recognized and human trafficking.
“The new team will build on these achievements and help bring those who exploit and profit from the misery of others to justice by making the investigation more robust and thorough.
“I hope that our commitment to combating these perpetrators also sends a message to the victims of modern slavery – that we support you and take all reports seriously.”
Modern slavery has many faces.
This involves moving or recruiting people who use threats, deception, or other means for the purpose of exploitation.
Unfortunately, it is NOT a topic that is limited to history or only exists in certain countries. Rather, it is a global problem that is happening right now.
There is no typical victim of slavery – it can be men, women, and children of any age, but it is usually common among the most vulnerable groups, minorities, or socially excluded groups.
Victims found in the UK come from many different countries including Poland, Hungary, Romania, Vietnam and the UK itself.
Modern slavery is organized crime with grave consequences. Too often citizens turn a blind eye, be it out of fear or ignorance.

Bev Hughes, Greater Manchester Deputy Mayor for Police, Crime, Criminal Justice and Fire, said, “Modern slavery is a despicable crime that exploits and treats vulnerable people as a commodity.
“We are working hard to prevent modern slavery in Greater Manchester and the new team of specialists will reinforce the pioneering work already underway in the fight against these crimes.
“The investigation team will take a victim-centered approach, protecting those exposed to these crimes and ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
“The team will also work with partners in the volunteer and community sectors, which will help better protect our communities and use our enforcement powers.”
