Jubilee Park in Ashton, Pennington Hall Park in Leigh and Alexandra Park in Wigan have been awarded the prestigious Green Flag for the 13th consecutive year.
Mesnes Park was also honored for the sixth time in a row after its first application in 2015.
A fifth green space was awarded this year. Colliers Corner, run and managed by The Bridgers volunteer group, again won a community award, supported by the Wigan Council’s Green Space Improvement Initiative.

The government is giving households £ 5,000 in grants to swap boilers for heat pumps
A flag ceremony was held at Colliers Corner in Howe Bridge today, attended by the Mayor of Wigan, community officials and volunteers from the district’s Friends of Groups.
Coun Paul Prescott, Wigan Council’s Cabinet Portfolio Owner on Environment, said, “Both before and during the pandemic, our district’s parks and green spaces have proven to be an invaluable lifeline in supporting the mental and physical health of residents.

“We are very pleased that four parks in our district have again been recognized for their excellence. Receiving this award reflects the hard work of staff, friend groups and other local volunteers to make our parks wonderful places to visit. ”
A green flag waving over you is a sign to the public that the space is of the highest possible standard, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.
Run by Keep Britain Tidy under the UK Department of Housing, Community and Local Government, the Green Flag Awards program recognizes amazing green spaces and sets the standard for outdoor management across the UK.
Terry Daly, Chairman of the Bridgers added, “I would like to thank all of our past and present volunteers, including the Bridgers, Gardner’s Bowling Club, and all of the local residents who have been absolutely amazing in helping us keep the corner. Without your support, Colliers Corner would not be as beautiful as it is today.
“Over the past 18 months, which has undoubtedly been one of the most challenging and traumatic periods of our lives, our volunteers have been immense. The support we received from Wigan Council has also been amazing. “
The awards come when Wigan Council closes its first Go Green Week, which focuses on climate change and how being in the great outdoors can have positive effects on the health of residents.
Wigan Borough is fortunate to be home to vast amounts of wonderful and expansive green spaces.
