Sunday nostalgia: crowds flock to Manchester’s Spinningfields for the Queen’s visit

America’s newest craze – the frisbee – Arrives in the UK against the unlikely backdrop of Old Trafford cricket ground.

The Frisbee was originally marketed by the US toy company Wham-O in 1957 and was a model Popcorn can lid being thrown around after Thanksgiving Day food. It was called Pluto Platter first!

We’re not sure what the Lancashire cricketers thought of the advertising girls throwing the discs across the sacred lawn – but the frisbee caught on in the UK with a vengeance.

It even got into that National Toy Hall of Fame In 1998.

1971

23rd June

Barriers couldn’t stop two-year-old Tracey Peyton from taking the queen when the monarch met crowds in Spinningfields.

The meeting took place during the Queen’s visit to the city, which included a tour of the District Court.

Tracey, carefully tied to the toddler’s reins after being lifted over the railing, looked a little awestruck as she waved her Union Jack flag.

1996

15th June

The destruction by a bomb dropped by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) in Manchester can be clearly seen, as rubble is on Arndale center.

The 1,500 kilogram truck bomb (the largest explosive charge in Britain since World War II) exploded in Corporation street.

More than 200 people were injured, but there were no fatalities as 75,000 had been evacuated from the area following a telephone warning.

Insurers estimated that caused the explosion £ 700 million Damage to the city’s infrastructure.
