Matt Peet insists the Wigan Warriors’ young forwards have what it takes to reach the league and take the club back to Super League glory.

The club’s young forwards have come under heavy criticism over the past year as the Warriors endured an indifferent season, with many blaming their inability to dominate at center.

Injuries and the late departure of George Burgess on the eve of the season meant many of Wigan’s rising stars played more than expected, a face Peet believes has been forgotten.

But the new Wigan boss has no qualms about the skills of his young strikers.

“I’m very confident in her,” said Peet.

“We are very quick in this country to pick up our own children and then put them down, we praise and criticize excessively.

“They are young players who need time to be developed, coached and supported.

“If you look at the top strikers in the competition, what were they doing at the age of 20? I think people would benefit from looking into this.

“The point is that they are on a journey and they have to perform to be on the team. There were times over the last year when they needed a break when their performances didn’t warrant a spot, but in the situation where we were, we were.” couldn’t take them out and give them the rest they needed. That was part of the problem. Again they played a lot more games than before.

“But I trust them a lot, I’ve known them for a long time and I know what I’m capable of.”
