Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirms left-back Alex Telles will be out until September after sustaining an ankle injury at pre-season training camp

  • Alex Telles will miss the start of the 2021/22 Premier League season due to injury
  • The left-back suffered an ankle blow during pre-season last week
  • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer initially said Telles would be “out for a few weeks”.
  • But he won’t return until September, according to United boss Solskjaer

Manchester United left-back Alex Telles will miss the start of the Premier League season with an ankle injury, confirmed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Brazilian weathered the problem during the club’s training camp in Surrey last week and returned home from duties, missing Saturday’s friendship defeat to QPR.

Solskjaer initially said Telles would be “out for a couple of weeks” but the United manager has since issued a disappointing update, revealing that he will now miss the first three games of the Premier League season in August.

Solskjaer told United’s official website, “Unfortunately, the news about Alex Telles is worse than we had hoped.

“His ankle injury is a little more severe than we hoped and he will be out for at least a short time, all of August I would think.”

In addition to missing out on this week’s friendlies against Brentford and Preston, Telles will also play United’s Premier League opener against Leeds on the 14th end of the month ahead of another warm-up against Everton.

Telles’ injury has left United a left-back problem as Luke Shaw is not back in training after his success with England at Euro 2020.

Telles only joined United last summer with a £ 15.4m deal from Portugal team Porto.

He was widely expected to usurp Shaw as left full-back, but the English star firmly proved his doubters are wrong and has become one of United’s key players lately – keeping Telles away from the team.

After a limited season, Telles has been linked to a move this summer, with players like Inter Milan and Roma interested in his service.
