Dundee United have no intention of letting Jamie McGrath return to Wigan Athletic in January following Kolo Toure’s appointment.

The Ireland international joined the Scottish Premiership side in the summer after falling out of favor under former boss Leam Richardson.

However, with Toure now replacing Richardson, it had been suggested by some supporters that the new boss should look to bring McGrath back to the club to help with their survival bid.

But, speaking to the Scottish press, as quoted by Wigan Today, Dundee United boss Liam Fox was adamant that the 26-year-old will finish the campaign with his side.

“Jamie is here on a season-long loan so will be staying beyond January. He’s been outstanding since I took over and is enjoying his football. He’s got himself back in the Republic of Ireland squad so the loan has worked for him the way he wanted it too as well.”

McGrath struggled to make an impact with the Latics after joining from St. Mirren at the start of the year.

Did any of these 20 ex Wigan Athletic players ever actually score a goal for the club?

the verdict

In an ideal world tour would have McGrath back at the club and he would assess him along with the rest of the squad because whilst he didn’t impress under Richardson, a fresh start could change things.

But, you can understand why Dundee United want to keep the player as he has been good for them this season and will be key moving forward.

Clearly, it’s not going to happen though, so Toure will now be focusing on how he can improve the current group and looking at reinforcements for when the window opens next month.
