This year’s Memorial Day falls on Sunday, November 14th – and it’s a time to remember those who died who gave their lives in the fight for the country.
Remembrance Day takes place on the Sunday closest to November 11th – Armistice Day.
Because in the 11th hour, the 11th day, the 11th month 1918 the fighting in the First World War stopped.

About 888,246 British and Colonial lives were lost on the front lines in this conflict, and thousands more died in other battles.
A number of Remembrance Day events are organized in Wigan to remember the dead.
Remembrance Sunday is celebrated in Leigh with parades where local councilors accompany residents to pay tribute to the sacrifices made by soldiers in both world wars and recent conflicts.
Wreaths will also be laid at war memorials across the borough including Abram, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Aspull, Atherton, Golborne, Hindley, Ince, Lowton, Platt Bridge, Shevington, Standish and Tyldesley.
Residents are also invited to participate in a national two-minute minute of silence on Thursday, November 11th at 11 a.m. to celebrate Armistice Day 2021, also known as Memorial Day.

Wigan’s Parade
The procession leaves City Hall on Library Street at 10:30 a.m. and heads along Library Street, Rodney Street, King Street, Wallgate, King Street West and Crawford Street to the War Memorial in All Saints’ Gardens.
The two-minute silence is observed at 11 a.m., followed by the sound of the ‘Last Post’ and ending with ‘Reveille’.
The leaders of the community lay wreaths at the memorial.
Leigh’s Parade
The parade takes place at 10.15am at Marsh High School Ullswater Street, Leigh and at 10.30am it goes down Railway Road, Market Street, Lord Street, Charles Street and Church Street to the Cenotaph in Church Street Gardens.
The cenotaph service is performed by the Leigh clergy, during which wreaths are laid by the various organizations.
