So The News caught up with Progress With Unity’s podcast host, Barry Worthington, who gave us a glimpse into a player who is also interested in Preston.

Here is what he had to say:

We signed Pearce from Leeds United in 2019 and he made his FA Cup debut against Leicester City.

He scored an own goal but from the start he showed a lot of promise and why he came with a reputation.

Last season, when we went through the administration, he played practically every game in the first half of the season and was the outstanding player.

Unfortunately, however, he suffered an injury that excluded him until the end of the season.

He’s definitely an exciting player and if you have a striker who can push through his crosses in the end, then he will contribute massively to the goal.

The only problem is you need a good central defense when he’s raging on the left – but he’s very fast and looks more like a winger than a defensive player. He’s also very physical.

Wigan currently has five left-backs and is without a contract this summer.

The club reportedly offered him a deal, perhaps at reduced wages, so he could go elsewhere in the summer.

But I’m sure we’ll sell it first, to be honest.

He was dying to get a job on the south coast.

If Pompey lured him to Fratton Park, it would be a great coup.

I don’t want to see him leave because he’s only 23 and has a great future ahead of him.

Whether he’s a high-end championship player is another question, but he’s a great League One player.

He’s a nice guy too, but sometimes you want players with a passion.

Danny Cowley is the type of manager who puts his arm around him and gets him going.

If he goes to Portsmouth it would be a great commitment and it would fit in perfectly with the system.

Evaluate the rumor

The left-back would be a great addition to the Pompey squad, who level the defense with two natural full-backs on either side of the pitch.

However, with priorities elsewhere in this window, a new left defender is not considered necessary at this point – especially if a move this month would require a fee.

Moving in the summer seems the more likely itinerary in this regard – but by then there will undoubtedly be increased competition for its services. Meanwhile, with people like Preston showing interest now, it might turn out to be too late.

There’s definitely Pompey interest in Pearce, but chances are the blues will land the former Leeds youngster this month.
