A downtown cafe that had to open during the strict lockdown was finally able to open its doors properly – serving cups of meatballs.

Lattsam is a café and beer café inspired by Scandinavian culture and cuisine, with a nod to the Swedish delicacy that put IKEA’s cafes on the map.

Although the venue opened last December, Greater Manchester was quickly plunged into a month-long lockdown.

The company decided to close for the foreseeable future on Jan. 4, citing an “expected drop in customer traffic and the ongoing unpredictability of the situation”.

But on July 5th it finally opened its doors and the kitchen was ready to go this week.

Lattsam means “lazy” or “carefree”, loosely translated from Swedish, and the site is intended to be a casual place where people can work with a laptop, have a pint after work, or enjoy a healthy, relaxed lunch.

The Swedish meatballs are the star of the show, priced at £ 4 a cup with a vegan option and optionally served with sauce and red berry jam.

They’re also served in a brioche bun.

The menu also includes a traditional prawn skagen – a classic Scandinavian dish with creamy, flavorful prawns on toast – and an all-day breakfast with these signature meatballs.

Since the café is owned by a brewery, there is also a large selection of beers from Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland.

Permanent beers include Mikkeller and Warpigs, although other guest beers are served alternately.

Lattsam is now open at 22 Spring Gardens with the menu being offered on a soft launch through Friday.
