A new store, accompanied by a Starbucks drive-thru, has been put forward at Templeton Road in Platt Bridge.
Lidl GB is now inviting the local community to consult on the draft plans, which it said would lead to around 40 new jobs.
Plans for the new supermarket include a sales area of 13,465 sq ft with an in-store bakery. The store will also be supported by 111 car parking spaces including eight dedicated accessible spaces, nine parent and child spaces, and two electric vehicle charging spaces.
There will be a public consultation event at Platt Bridge Community Center on 24 November between 3pm and 7pm. Feedback can also be offered online.
Lidl UK’s regional head of property Robert Lawton said: “We are delighted to announce plans to bring a new Lidl supermarket to serve Platt Bridge. We have long been committed to serving the communities in and around Wigan and the new development will provide even more local people with greater access to high quality, affordable produce.
“We hope that as many people as possible are able to participate in this public consultation and look forward to sharing and discussing our plans with everyone.”
Lidl is now the sixth largest supermarket in the UK, with a market share of 7.2%. The group also has stores in Wigan town centre, on Woodhouse Lane and in Pemberton within the area.
Rival Aldi, confirmed in October as now being the UK’s fourth largest operator in the sector, has also advanced a Wigan scheme this year, putting forward plans for a store at the Arnold Clark site in Ashton-in-Makerfield.
