Wigan Athletics striker Charlie Wyke was hospitalized on Thursday after a breakdown at the club’s training facilities.

The 28-year-old has scored five goals for the Latics this season since joining from Sunderland this summer and is the third player to suffer health complications this week.

Sheffield United midfielder John Fleck was hospitalized earlier this week after collapsing while his side won in Reading on Tuesday night.

FC Sheriff Tiraspol striker Adama Traore went down with his chest on Wednesday evening during his team’s Champions League game against Real Madrid.

Striker Wyke was treated by Wigan’s medical staff at the club’s Christopher Park training base before an ambulance arrived at the scene to take him to the hospital.

The striker was conscious and spoke in the hospital on an encouraging update but the club have confirmed that he will not be considered for selection in the near future.

A statement from the League One club said: “Wigan Athletics striker Charlie Wyke will not be available for selection any time soon.

“The 28-year-old collapsed while training ahead of the Latics Sky Bet League One game at Cambridge United and was taken to hospital after treatment by the club’s medical staff, where he will continue to be monitored.

“We are happy to announce that Charlie is in stable condition and is communicating with his family, hospital staff and the club’s medical team.

“Charlie will continue to be closely monitored for the next few days by an independent medical advisor and the club’s medical staff.”

Wigan chairman Talal Al Hammad added his best wishes in a tweet: “I pray that you are better and that you will soon recover, Charlie.

“You are in all our desires when you recover. We all hold you in thoughts and prayers in the hope that you will find strength every new day. Get well soon.”

Wigan’s CEO Mal Brannigan also gave an update on Wyke’s condition: “First and foremost, Charlie’s health and well-being and support for him and his family are an absolute priority for anyone involved with Wigan Athletic.

“As a club, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to all of the NHS staff who, as we know, have been outstanding in their response and subsequent care for Charlie in collaboration with our medical team during what has been a challenging time.”

“This news will of course sound the alarm, although we kindly ask that the privacy of Charlie and his family be respected. In due course we will provide our supporters with further updates. “

Wyke has scored many goals with Carlisle United and Bradford City in the Football League, while scoring 42 goals in three seasons with Sunderland before joining Wigan this year.

The incident follows Sergio Agüero’s health complications for Barcelona – which resulted in the former Manchester City striker being sidelined for at least three months.

This summer’s European Championship was overshadowed by the traumatic collapse of Danish playmaker Christian Eriksen in his nation’s opening game against Finland – the Inter star has not played since then.
