Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has indicated that Jesse Lingard will stay at Manchester United and that the striker has a “big role” to play this season.
The 28-year-old Lingard has entered the final year of his United contract and has not played for the club in the Premier League since New Years 2020.
Despite a prolific loan from West Ham in the second half of last season, Lingard hasn’t nearly left United this summer, and United hasn’t been able to sell a single player.
But with Marcus Rashford sidelined for October at the earliest and other strikers not fully fit, Solskjaer is ready to keep Lingard – who was unavailable for beating Leeds 5-1 when he tested positive for Covid-19 last week.
“Don’t forget Jesse Lingard,” said Solskjaer as he discussed his attack options.
“He reinvented himself and came back to the man we know. With his quality he will play a big role. I forgot about him when I talked about goal scorers.”
“Of course there could be more rotation. They’ll be fresher. You have to have a big and strong squad to be competitive in this league. It’s the best league in the world.”
“You have to be lucky with injuries. I’m looking forward to working with these guys.”
Solskjaer is hoping more players could return to Southampton for the hike on Sunday, with Lingard set to be judged after his isolation ends.
