Harry Maguire has announced that he has been in contact with FIFA President Gianni Infantino to discuss possible developments in football.

The FIFA boss went to see the Manchester United skipper earlier this season and the two exchanged emails to discuss their thoughts on the game.

Maguire has been at the forefront of a movement where players have taken on greater social responsibility since the initial lockdown and he ensured that grocery packages were delivered to their homes in Sheffield last year.

The United defender has also worked closely with Liverpool counterpart Jordan Henderson on the #PlayersTogether movement, which has raised millions for the NHS.

Maguire now also has an impact on the game on the field. Infantino asks his opinion on these matters, which the United captain is only too happy to provide.

“We talked over email. It’s great that he is [Infantino] I got in touch and I appreciate that, “Maguire told ESPN.

“He’s a highly respected man and obviously someone I respect. It’s really nice for him to get in touch and talk to me about ways we can develop football.

“First and foremost, I respect everything he has to tell me. He’s the boss, he’s the one who tells me or explains what’s going on. But if he asks me a question, I would of course respond with my honest opinion “My opinion is obviously one of the opinions of a million people, but if I could have received tiny, tiny submissions, that would matter.”

Player power was also at the heart of the doomed European Super League project. Footballers from participating clubs spoke out before their employers waved the white flag.

United was a founding member of the ESL but withdrew from the project less than 48 hours after launch after a violent backlash.

While Maguire didn’t speak directly about the ESL, he believes it’s important that players have a voice in the game.

“I think it’s really important that footballers have a voice in football,” he said. “It’s really important that fans have a voice in football and so do the owners. We’re all together, we all love the sport.” We all have a great passion for the sport and it is important that everyone has a voice.

“I think when you play for Manchester United you have a big profile, whether you’re captain or not. Of course I’m the club’s captain and I’m really proud of it, but there are all the great players and other great voices Football that I am sure will make a big contribution. “
